Do you wish your boots were easier to put on and take off?
Do your boot zips need replacing?
-
We can solve these problems with quality repairs, using traditional methods.
- Zips replaced
- Insertion of zips into pull-on boots
- Boot leg widened/taken in/shortened
- Leather inserts
- Tabs & poppers replaced
Many riders walk uncomfortably around show grounds in riding boots, fearful that if pulled off, they may not be able to squeeze their boots back on in time for the next class.
Riders wearing boots with broken zips are forced to secure them with a combination of safety pins and gaffer tape – not the best look for the show ring!
Either way the solution is to buy costly new boots that need to be worn in, or to find someone who can insert or fix boot zips.
Using traditional methods and equipment we transform new and old leather goods. Specialising in zip replacements, we also repair other leather items including motorbike leathers, bags, gun cases and horse tack.
Repairs to all types of boots include:
- zip insertion to pull-on boots
- zip replacement
- boot leg widening leather insertions boot leg narrowing or shortening boot patching

In 1998 Lucy Francis commenced her Saddlery training at Cordwainers College in London. She completed the HND Saddlery design and technology course and at her graduation she was awarded first prize for the advanced loriners paper set by the Worshipful Company of Loriners.
Throughout university Lucy spent each summer working on a ranch in Michigan, she taught children and teenagers how to ride and care for horses. She swam with the horses, rode western; barrel raced and even towed a water-skier on horse back!
She went on to study for a BSc (Hons) in Equine Science at Hartpury College and during her final year of study she also worked as a Research Assistant on a project looking at causes and affects of gastric ulceration in foals and weanlings.
After graduating, Lucy worked with an established Saddler to expand her knowledge and skills. She split her time between the shop floor and work shop, selling products, advising customers and also repairing tack and making commissioned items.
The Saddlery stocked a range of long leather boots including Konigs. She was taught how to measure clients for made-to-measure Konigs. Lucy was trained how to stretch and widen customers boots, to insert zips into pull on boots and how to replace broken zips using a traditional treadle sewing machine.
Lucy now splits her time between saddlery work and boot work. She has a workshop in Hildenborough, where she repairs tack and produces commissioned items such as bridles, martingales and oak bark stirrup leathers. She repairs and alters all boots by hand at the boot workshop in Hartfield using her collection of traditional tools and treadle sewing machines.
Lucy answers each enquiry to ensure that the relevant information is gathered and correct advice is given. To ensure a consistent high standard of workmanship, all of the work sent to ‘Fix My Boot Zips’ is completed on site by Lucy personally.
